Panoramic Radiograph

A single, wide-field extraoral radiograph that captures both dental arches and associated maxillofacial structures in one image using a rotating X-ray source and receptor.

Full Definition

A panoramic radiograph is produced by synchronised rotation of the X-ray tube and image receptor around the patient's head, sweeping through a curved focal trough that approximates the shape of the dental arches. The resulting image provides a broad overview of the teeth, alveolar bone, temporomandibular joints, maxillary sinuses, and inferior dental canals. Because the technique sacrifices fine detail for wide coverage, it is supplemented by intraoral radiographs for specific diagnostic needs. Editors should note that 'panoramic radiograph' is distinct from 'orthopantomogram' (OPG), though the terms are often used interchangeably; 'OPG' is technically a brand-derived term. The preferred generic terms in current literature are 'panoramic radiograph' or 'dental panoramic tomograph'.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred generic term over 'OPG' in clinical reports. 'Panorex' is a trade name and should be avoided in formal writing.
