Bifurcation involvement refers to the destruction of periodontal supporting tissues — bone and attachment — in the inter-radicular region specifically of two-rooted (bifurcated) teeth, most commonly mandibular molars. It is a sub-classification of furcation involvement and is graded on a scale (e.g., Class I–III) to indicate severity. In dental research manuscripts, editors must recognise that 'bifurcation' applies only to two-rooted teeth, while 'trifurcation' applies to three-rooted teeth. Conflating these terms is a common editorial error. Accurate use of this terminology is critical in periodontology study reports and clinical trial outcome tables.
