Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is characterised by sharp, transient pain arising from exposed dentinal tubules in response to external stimuli. It is most commonly associated with gingival recession or enamel erosion that leaves the cervical dentin unprotected. In research manuscripts, it must be distinguished from reversible pulpitis, which produces a similar symptom profile. The hydrodynamic theory—fluid movement within dentinal tubules activating pulpal nerves—is the accepted mechanistic framework cited in the literature.
