Vertical Facial Pattern
A classification of the overall proportional relationship of the face in the vertical dimension, typically described as hyperdivergent, normodivergent, or hypodivergent.
Full Definition
Vertical facial pattern describes the inclination of the mandibular plane relative to the cranial base and is a fundamental descriptor in orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic diagnosis. A hyperdivergent (high-angle) pattern is associated with open bites, long lower facial height, and posterior growth rotation; a hypodivergent (low-angle) pattern is associated with deep bites, short lower facial height, and anterior growth rotation. Editors must ensure consistent use of the preferred terminology within a document — 'hyperdivergent/hypodivergent' and 'high-angle/low-angle' are used interchangeably in the literature but should not be mixed without editorial note.
Usage
Usage note: Do not mix 'hyperdivergent' and 'high-angle' in the same document without a defining equivalence statement.
