advancement flap

Reconstructive technique moving adjacent tissue forward to close a surgical defect.

Full Definition

A type of local tissue rearrangement where adjacent skin is moved forward in a straight line to close a defect without rotation. Advancement flaps are created by making relaxing incisions parallel to the defect, allowing the tissue to slide forward. This technique is particularly useful for reconstructing defects on the forehead, temple, and other areas where tissue has good mobility and the advancement can follow natural skin tension lines.
