Full Definition
A form of melanoma in situ that typically develops on chronically sun-exposed skin, most commonly the face of elderly patients. Lentigo maligna appears as a slowly enlarging, irregularly pigmented macule or patch with variegated colors and irregular borders. While it represents melanoma in situ (confined to the epidermis), it has the potential to progress to invasive melanoma (lentigo maligna melanoma) if left untreated. Complete excision with adequate margins is the treatment of choice.
