Full Definition

Synchronized cardioversion is a controlled electrical therapy used to terminate organized cardiac arrhythmias in patients who maintain a pulse and blood pressure. Unlike defibrillation, the electrical discharge is synchronized to the R wave of the QRS complex to avoid delivering energy during the vulnerable period of the cardiac cycle, which could potentially induce ventricular fibrillation. This procedure is commonly used for atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and stable ventricular tachycardia with a pulse. Lower energy levels are typically required compared to defibrillation, starting at 50-100 joules for atrial arrhythmias and 100 joules for ventricular tachycardia.
