In emergency psychiatry, protective factors are characteristics, circumstances, or coping resources that mitigate the risk of suicidal behaviour even in the presence of risk factors. Commonly identified protective factors include strong family or social connectedness, responsibility for children or pets, religious or moral objections to suicide, effective problem-solving skills, and engagement with treatment. Documentation of protective factors is a required element of thorough suicide risk assessments and discharge planning. Editors should ensure that protective factors are not confused with 'risk factors' (which elevate risk) or with 'coping strategies' (a subset of protective factors). The term is always plural in standard clinical usage.
