Full Definition

An endoscopic procedure that allows direct visualization of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum using a flexible endoscope. In emergency settings, EGD is performed to evaluate and treat upper gastrointestinal bleeding, remove foreign bodies, or assess suspected perforations. The procedure can be both diagnostic and therapeutic, allowing for interventions such as cauterization of bleeding vessels, injection of sclerosants, or placement of clips.
