Full Definition

Intraabdominal packing is a damage control surgery technique involving the strategic placement of surgical laparotomy pads or sponges directly against bleeding surfaces within the peritoneal cavity to achieve temporary hemostasis. This technique is employed when conventional hemostatic methods are unsuccessful or time-consuming in unstable patients. Common applications include liver trauma, retroperitoneal bleeding, and pelvis fracture-related hemorrhage. The packing provides tamponade effect while allowing patient stabilization, correction of coagulopathy, and preparation for definitive surgical repair. Planned return to the operating room within 24-48 hours is typically required for pack removal and definitive management.
