Functional NET

A neuroendocrine tumor that produces clinically significant amounts of hormones causing recognizable symptoms.

Full Definition

A functional neuroendocrine tumor (NET) is one that secretes biologically active hormones or peptides in sufficient quantities to produce clinical symptoms. Examples include insulinomas causing hypoglycemia, gastrinomas causing Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and VIPomas causing watery diarrhea. These tumors are distinguished from non-functional NETs, which may produce hormones but not in clinically significant amounts. The diagnosis requires correlation between elevated biochemical markers and corresponding clinical symptoms. Treatment often focuses on both tumor control and symptom management through hormone suppression.
