Full Definition

MIBG (meta-iodobenzylguanidine) scintigraphy is a specialized nuclear medicine study that utilizes the structural similarity of MIBG to norepinephrine for tumor localization. This radiotracer is actively taken up by chromaffin cells and sympathetic nerve terminals, making it highly specific for pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas. The study involves injection of I-123 or I-131 labeled MIBG followed by whole-body imaging after 24-48 hours. While highly specific, MIBG scintigraphy has lower sensitivity than other imaging modalities, particularly for certain paraganglioma subtypes.

Usage note: Note that certain medications can interfere with MIBG uptake and should be discontinued before imaging.
