Full Definition

Octreotide is a synthetic octapeptide that mimics the hormone somatostatin, binding to somatostatin receptors to inhibit the release of various hormones and growth factors. It is used both for symptom control in functional neuroendocrine tumors and for its antiproliferative effects. Available in immediate-release subcutaneous and long-acting intramuscular formulations, octreotide is often the first-line treatment for carcinoid syndrome and other hormone-excess states associated with NETs.
