secretory diarrhea

Watery diarrhea caused by active secretion of electrolytes and water, characteristic of certain functional neuroendocrine tumors.

Full Definition

Secretory diarrhea represents a hallmark clinical manifestation of certain functional neuroendocrine tumors, particularly VIPomas and some carcinoid tumors. This type of diarrhea is characterized by high-volume, watery stools that persist despite fasting, distinguishing it from osmotic or inflammatory diarrhea. The mechanism involves excessive secretion of vasoactive intestinal peptide or other bioactive substances that stimulate intestinal secretion. Diagnosis requires documentation of stool volume, electrolyte composition, and measurement of relevant tumor markers. Treatment focuses on controlling the underlying tumor and symptomatic management with somatostatin analogs.

Usage

Usage note: Emphasize persistence during fasting as a distinguishing feature.
