Somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS), also known as OctreoScan, is a nuclear medicine imaging technique that uses indium-111 labeled pentetreotide to detect neuroendocrine tumors expressing somatostatin receptors. The technique involves injection of the radiotracer followed by imaging at 4 and 24 hours to detect uptake in tumor tissue. While largely superseded by Ga-68 DOTATATE PET/CT for superior resolution and sensitivity, SRS remains valuable in certain clinical situations and for centers without access to newer PET tracers. Positive uptake on SRS also helps predict response to somatostatin analog therapy and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy.
