Full Definition

Stimulated thyroglobulin refers to thyroglobulin measurements obtained when TSH levels are elevated, either through thyroid hormone withdrawal or recombinant human TSH (rhTSH) administration. TSH stimulation enhances thyroglobulin production from any residual thyroid tissue or thyroid cancer cells, improving the sensitivity of thyroglobulin as a tumor marker. This testing is typically performed 6-12 months after initial treatment and periodically thereafter for surveillance. The technique helps detect small amounts of residual disease that might not be apparent with suppressed thyroglobulin measurements obtained while patients are on thyroid hormone therapy.
