Treatment using radioactive iodine-131 to destroy remaining thyroid tissue after surgery.
Full Definition
A post-surgical treatment modality primarily used following thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer. The radioactive iodine is selectively absorbed by any remaining thyroid cells, including microscopic cancer cells or normal thyroid remnants. This treatment requires specific patient preparation including thyroid hormone withdrawal or use of recombinant TSH, and patients must follow radiation safety protocols during the treatment period.
