Eye disease associated with thyroid dysfunction, particularly Graves' disease.
Full Definition
An autoimmune inflammatory condition affecting the extraocular muscles and orbital tissues, most commonly seen in Graves' disease. The condition can cause diplopia, proptosis, lid retraction, and in severe cases, compressive optic neuropathy. Thyroid ophthalmopathy may precede, coincide with, or follow thyroid dysfunction and can be influenced by thyroid treatment decisions. Smoking significantly worsens the condition, and radioactive iodine treatment may exacerbate eye disease in susceptible patients.
