Canal Curvature

The degree of angulation or bend within a root canal, commonly measured by the Schneider method and expressed in degrees.

Full Definition

Canal curvature describes the anatomical deviation of a root canal from a straight path and is a key factor in planning instrumentation strategy and file selection in root canal treatment. It is most commonly quantified using the Schneider angle method, which measures the angle between the long axis of the canal and a line drawn from the apical foramen to where the canal diverges from the straight axis. Curvatures are classified as mild (less than 10°), moderate (10°–25°), or severe (greater than 25°). Editors should note that 'curvature' refers to the anatomical feature, while 'ledging,' 'transportation,' or 'perforation' describe iatrogenic complications associated with curved canals. The Schneider method is referenced by name in case reports.

Usage note: When editing pre-operative assessments, confirm that canal curvature is expressed in degrees and the measurement method is cited. Vague descriptors such as 'very curved' are inadequate in specialist reports.
