Electronic Apex Locator

An electronic device that measures electrical impedance or frequency to determine the position of the apical foramen during root canal treatment.

Full Definition

Electronic apex locators (EALs) are endodontic instruments that use the difference in electrical impedance or multi-frequency measurements between the oral mucosa and the root canal contents to estimate the position of the apical constriction or foramen. Fourth-generation and fifth-generation devices have largely supplanted radiographic working length estimation as the primary method in contemporary practice. In clinical records and manuscripts, the device is often abbreviated as EAL; editors should expand the acronym on first use and not confuse it with 'apex locator,' which is the colloquial shorthand already indexed in the database. The technology should not be described as measuring the apex precisely, as it estimates the minor apical constriction.
