Hydraulic Sealer

A bioceramic or calcium silicate-based root canal sealer that sets in the presence of moisture and expands slightly to create a hermetic seal within the canal system.

Hydraulic sealers, most notably bioceramic sealers (e.g., iRoot SP, AH Plus Bioceramic, TotalFill BC Sealer), are formulated from calcium silicate compounds that undergo hydraulic setting reactions when exposed to moisture in dentinal tubules. Unlike traditional epoxy resin or zinc oxide eugenol sealers, they produce hydroxyapatite on setting, promoting biocompatibility and chemical bonding to dentinal walls. Their flowability allows penetration into accessory canals and the apical delta. Editors must ensure that generic product descriptors ('bioceramic sealer', 'hydraulic sealer', 'calcium silicate sealer') are distinguished from proprietary brand names, which should be capitalised, and that the ISO classification or composition is stated in materials and methods sections.
