Internal Root Resorption
A pathological process in which dentoclastic cells destroy dentine from within the pulp canal, producing a characteristic oval or fusiform radiolucent enlargement of the canal on radiographs.

Internal root resorption is a relatively uncommon pulpal pathology caused by the activity of multinucleated clastic cells within the root canal, resulting in progressive loss of dentine from the inside outward. Radiographically, it appears as a well-defined, oval enlargement of the canal lumen. Editors should distinguish this term from external root resorption, which originates at the periodontal surface. The two conditions have different aetiologies, radiographic appearances, and treatments, and authors frequently confuse them. 'Internal resorption' is acceptable as a shorthand but should be defined on first use in formal manuscripts.
