Reciprocating Motion

A rotational mode of endodontic file movement in which the instrument alternates between clockwise and counterclockwise angular rotations, reducing cyclic fatigue compared with continuous rotation.

Full Definition

Reciprocating motion was introduced to prolong file lifespan by replacing continuous 360° rotation with alternating rotational arcs — a larger clockwise cutting angle followed by a smaller counterclockwise release angle. The WaveOne and Reciproc systems popularised this approach, each designed for single-file use. The asymmetric arc pattern (e.g., 150° clockwise, 30° counterclockwise) allows the file to advance apically while preventing debris compaction. Editors must distinguish 'reciprocating motion' from 'oscillating motion' (equal arcs) and from 'continuous rotation', as these describe mechanically distinct kinematics; inaccurate use of these terms in methods sections misrepresents experimental conditions.

Usage note: Always specify the rotational arc values (degrees) when reporting reciprocating motion in methods sections. Do not use 'reciprocating' and 'oscillating' interchangeably.
