Vertical Root Fracture

A longitudinal fracture of a tooth root that typically originates at the root canal wall and propagates outward, often resulting in tooth extraction.

Full Definition

A vertical root fracture (VRF) is a complete or incomplete crack running along the long axis of the root, usually initiating at the canal wall as a result of excessive compaction forces during obturation, post placement, or restored tooth function. VRFs are notoriously difficult to diagnose on conventional radiographs; CBCT has improved detection rates. They are a significant complication of root canal treatment and are associated with a poor prognosis, frequently requiring extraction. Editors handling endodontic case reports must accurately distinguish VRF from horizontal root fracture, external root resorption, and other crack types, as these carry different treatment implications.

Usage note: Always specify orientation (vertical vs. horizontal); 'root fracture' unqualified is insufficiently precise in clinical documentation.
