The Vertucci classification, introduced by Frank Vertucci in 1984, categorises root canal systems into eight types (I–VIII) based on the number of canals entering the root, their divisions and fusions along the root length, and the number of apical foramina. Type I (single canal, single foramen) is the simplest; Type IV (two separate canals throughout, two foramina) is common in mandibular incisors. This system is the standard reference framework in endodontic morphology research, and editors must ensure that Roman numerals are used for type designations and that authors define the type at first use rather than assuming reader familiarity.
Usage
Usage note: Use Roman numerals for Vertucci types (e.g., Type IV, not Type 4). Capitalise 'Vertucci' as an eponym but lowercase 'type'.
