Epileptiform abnormalities are EEG waveforms that have characteristics similar to those seen in epilepsy, including sharp waves, spikes, and spike-and-wave complexes, but may occur in the absence of clinical seizures. These patterns indicate cortical hyperexcitability and increased seizure risk but do not definitively diagnose epilepsy. They can be found in asymptomatic individuals, particularly children, and may be triggered by sleep deprivation, photic stimulation, or hyperventilation. Clinical correlation is essential to determine their significance in individual patients.
