Epileptiform

Pronunciation: /ɪˈpɪlɛptɪˌfɔrm/

EEG waveforms that resemble epileptic activity but may occur in both epileptic and non-epileptic contexts.

Full Definition

Epileptiform describes EEG patterns that have the morphological characteristics of epileptic discharges, including spikes, sharp waves, and spike-and-wave complexes. However, epileptiform activity can be seen in individuals without epilepsy, particularly in sleep or under certain conditions like hyperventilation. The presence of epileptiform discharges increases the likelihood of epilepsy but is not diagnostic by itself. Clinical correlation is essential, as approximately 1-2% of the normal population may show occasional epileptiform patterns without having seizures.

Usage

Usage note: Avoid using interchangeably with 'epileptic' as epileptiform patterns can occur without epilepsy.

In Context

  • "The EEG showed occasional epileptiform discharges during sleep but no definite seizure activity." — EEG report
  • "Epileptiform patterns were noted in 15% of patients with first unprovoked seizures." — Research study
