Localization-related epilepsy, now more commonly termed focal epilepsy, refers to seizure disorders that arise from a specific anatomical region of the brain. This classification is based on the concept that seizures originate from a localized epileptogenic zone that can potentially be identified through clinical, EEG, and neuroimaging studies. Localization-related epilepsies are divided into symptomatic (with known structural cause), cryptogenic (presumed structural but unidentified), and idiopathic (no structural abnormality) categories. This terminology is being phased out in favor of the newer ILAE classification system.
