Exercise Regression involves the deliberate modification of therapeutic exercises to reduce physical or cognitive demands when patients experience difficulty, pain exacerbation, or inability to maintain proper form with current activities. This clinical decision-making process may involve decreasing resistance, reducing range of motion, simplifying movement patterns, or returning to earlier phases of rehabilitation protocols. Regression is a normal and expected component of rehabilitation progression, particularly following surgery, acute injury, or during symptom flare-ups. Effective regression maintains therapeutic benefit while respecting current tissue tolerance and patient capabilities, serving as a temporary measure before resuming forward progression.
