amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is a prenatal diagnostic test performed between 15-20 weeks of pregnancy, where a needle is inserted through the mother's abdomen into the amniotic sac to extract fluid for genetic analysis. The procedure can detect chromosomal abnormalities, neural tube defects, and genetic disorders. Results are typically available within 1-2 weeks and carry a small risk of miscarriage.

Usage note: Always lowercase unless beginning a sentence. Do not confuse with amniotomy (artificial rupture of membranes).
