cerebroplacental ratio

Also written as: CPR — cerebroplacental ratio

Ratio of middle cerebral artery to umbilical artery pulsatility indices, used to assess fetal well-being.

Full Definition

A calculated ratio comparing the pulsatility index of the fetal middle cerebral artery to that of the umbilical artery. This ratio provides information about fetal cardiovascular adaptation and placental function. A low cerebroplacental ratio may indicate fetal compromise due to placental insufficiency, as the fetus redistributes blood flow to protect vital organs like the brain. Values below the 5th centile are considered abnormal and may warrant increased surveillance or delivery consideration.

Usage

Usage note: Hyphenate when used as a compound modifier: 'cerebroplacental-ratio monitoring.'

In Context

  • "The cerebroplacental ratio was below the 5th centile, suggesting fetal brain sparing." — Ultrasound report
  • "CPR monitoring will guide timing of delivery in this growth-restricted fetus." — Management plan
