Full Definition
Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a prenatal diagnostic procedure performed between 10-13 weeks of pregnancy to detect genetic abnormalities. The test involves taking a small sample of chorionic villi from the placenta, either through the cervix (transcervical) or abdomen (transabdominal). CVS provides earlier genetic information than amniocentesis but cannot detect neural tube defects.
