uterine artery Doppler

Ultrasound assessment of uterine artery blood flow to predict preeclampsia and growth restriction risks.

Full Definition

A Doppler ultrasound examination of the uterine arteries, typically performed in the second trimester as part of preeclampsia screening. Abnormal flow patterns, characterized by elevated pulsatility index or the presence of notching, may indicate inadequate placental implantation and increased risk of preeclampsia or fetal growth restriction. The examination is usually performed bilaterally, and results are often combined with biochemical markers and maternal characteristics to calculate overall risk scores.

Usage

Usage note: Specify bilateral assessment when both arteries are examined, as unilateral abnormalities may have different clinical significance.
