Full Definition

Temporary blockage of a vessel or airway using an inflatable balloon catheter to redirect flow or promote organ development. In fetal surgery, balloon occlusion is most commonly used for tracheal occlusion to promote lung growth in fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and for vascular occlusion in twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. The technique allows for reversible intervention that can be maintained for weeks to months before balloon removal prior to delivery.
