The Management of Myelomeningocele Study (MOMS) was a landmark randomized controlled trial published in 2011 that compared prenatal surgical repair of myelomeningocele with standard postnatal repair. The study demonstrated that prenatal surgery reduced the need for ventriculoperitoneal shunting and improved motor outcomes at 12 and 30 months of age. However, it also showed increased risks of preterm delivery and uterine dehiscence. The MOMS trial established the evidence base for prenatal spina bifida repair and defined the current eligibility criteria used by fetal surgery centers worldwide.
