Full Definition
Myelomeningocele represents the most severe form of neural tube defect, characterized by incomplete closure of the spinal column with herniation of the spinal cord, nerve roots, and meninges through the bony defect. This condition results in varying degrees of paralysis and cognitive impairment. Prenatal surgical repair has shown benefits in reducing the need for ventriculoperitoneal shunting and improving motor function compared to postnatal repair.
