A double-contrast barium study is a specialized radiographic examination that combines barium sulfate contrast material with air insufflation to provide detailed visualization of the gastrointestinal tract mucosa. This technique creates optimal contrast between the barium-coated mucosal surface and the air-filled lumen, allowing detection of small lesions, polyps, and subtle mucosal irregularities that might be missed with single-contrast studies. While largely superseded by cross-sectional imaging and endoscopy in many clinical scenarios, double-contrast studies remain valuable for specific indications and patient populations where other modalities are contraindicated.
