Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, arising from the interstitial cells of Cajal. These tumors are characterized by specific genetic mutations, most commonly in the KIT or PDGFRA genes. GISTs can occur anywhere in the GI tract but are most frequent in the stomach and small intestine. They are typically treated with targeted therapy using tyrosine kinase inhibitors like imatinib, and their prognosis depends on size, location, and mitotic rate.
