Full Definition

Pancreatic parenchymal atrophy refers to the progressive loss of normal pancreatic tissue, characterized by decreased gland volume, fibrosis, and functional impairment. This condition commonly occurs upstream from pancreatic ductal obstruction caused by tumors, chronic pancreatitis, or ductal strictures. The atrophic changes result from reduced drainage of pancreatic secretions, leading to tissue damage and eventual replacement with fibrous tissue. Recognition of parenchymal atrophy is important for surgical planning and assessment of remaining pancreatic function.
