Full Definition
Low anterior resection (LAR) is a surgical procedure involving removal of the rectosigmoid junction and upper to mid rectum with restoration of intestinal continuity through a low pelvic anastomosis. This technique is commonly used for rectal cancers located 6-12 cm from the anal verge, allowing for sphincter preservation while achieving adequate oncological margins. The procedure may be performed open or laparoscopically and often includes total mesorectal excision for cancer cases. A diverting ileostomy is frequently created to protect the anastomosis in high-risk patients.
