trocar

Pronunciation: TROH-kar

Pointed surgical instrument used to create access ports for laparoscopic surgery.

Full Definition

A sharp, pointed surgical instrument consisting of a cutting stylet within a cannula, used to create initial entry into body cavities during minimally invasive surgery. In laparoscopic procedures, trocars create ports through which the laparoscope and surgical instruments are inserted. Different sizes (5mm, 10-12mm, 15mm) accommodate various instruments. Modern trocars may feature safety mechanisms to prevent injury during insertion. Proper placement technique is crucial to avoid injury to underlying structures including bowel and blood vessels.

Usage

Usage note: Spelling is 'trocar' not 'trochar'; avoid confusion with tracheal procedures.
