Full Definition
A volvulus occurs when a segment of bowel twists around its mesenteric attachment, creating a closed-loop obstruction with potential vascular compromise. Common sites include the sigmoid colon, cecum, and in pediatric patients, the midgut. Sigmoid volvulus often affects elderly patients with chronic constipation and elongated sigmoid colon. Cecal volvulus typically occurs in younger patients with mobile cecum. Treatment may involve endoscopic detorsion for sigmoid cases or immediate surgical intervention for cecal volvulus or cases with suspected perforation.
