Senile calcification refers to the age-related deposition of calcium in cardiac structures, most commonly affecting the mitral annulus, aortic valve, and cardiac conduction system. This process is distinct from pathological calcification and represents normal aging changes that begin in the fifth decade of life. While often asymptomatic, extensive calcification can lead to valvular dysfunction, conduction abnormalities, or increased embolic risk. In geriatric cardiology, distinguishing between physiologic senile calcification and pathologic calcific disease is crucial for appropriate treatment decisions and avoiding unnecessary interventions in elderly patients.
