lymphadenectomy
Pronunciation: lim-fad-uh-NEK-tuh-mee
Surgical removal of lymph nodes, commonly performed in gynecologic cancer staging and treatment.
Full Definition
Lymphadenectomy is the surgical excision of lymph nodes, which plays a crucial role in the staging and treatment of gynecologic malignancies. In gynecologic oncology, this procedure most commonly involves removal of pelvic and/or para-aortic lymph node chains. The extent of lymphadenectomy depends on the primary tumor type, stage, and surgical approach. Systematic lymphadenectomy provides important prognostic information and may have therapeutic benefit. However, the procedure carries risks including lymphedema, nerve injury, and vascular complications. Sentinel lymph node mapping is increasingly used as a less morbid alternative in selected cases.
Usage
Usage note: Use specific anatomic descriptors (pelvic, para-aortic) when applicable.
