Full Definition

Parametrectomy is the surgical excision of the parametrium, which consists of the connective tissue, blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves that surround the cervix and upper portion of the vagina. This procedure is most commonly performed as part of radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer treatment. The extent of parametrial resection varies depending on the stage of disease and surgical approach. Parametrectomy may also be performed during other pelvic surgeries when parametrial involvement is suspected.

Usage note: Distinguish from 'parametrium' which refers to the anatomical structure, not its removal.
