Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is an interventional radiology procedure used primarily to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids. The technique involves inserting a catheter through the femoral artery and navigating to the uterine arteries under fluoroscopic guidance. Small particles (typically polyvinyl alcohol or tris-acryl gelatin microspheres) are then injected to occlude the vessels supplying the fibroids, causing them to shrink over time. UAE offers an alternative to hysterectomy or myomectomy, particularly for women who wish to preserve their uterus. The procedure can also be used emergently to control postpartum hemorrhage or bleeding from other gynecologic conditions.
