Cooper's ligament

The fibrous tissue that provides structural support to the breast, extending from the chest wall to the skin.

Cooper's ligaments, also known as suspensory ligaments of Cooper, are fibrous connective tissue structures that provide architectural support to the breast. These ligaments extend from the deep fascia of the chest wall through the breast parenchyma to the dermis of the skin, creating a three-dimensional support network. They help maintain breast shape and position against gravitational forces. Age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and hormonal changes can cause these ligaments to stretch and weaken, contributing to breast ptosis (sagging). Understanding Cooper's ligaments is important in breast examination and when counseling patients about breast support and cosmetic concerns.
