D&C
Also written as: D&C — dilation and curettage
Dilation and curettage, a surgical procedure involving cervical dilation and scraping of the uterine lining.
Full Definition
Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a minor surgical procedure in which the cervix is dilated and a curette (spoon-shaped instrument) is used to remove tissue from the inside of the uterus. This procedure may be performed for diagnostic purposes to investigate abnormal bleeding, or therapeutically to remove retained pregnancy tissue after miscarriage or to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. D&C can be performed under local or general anesthesia and is typically done as an outpatient procedure. The removed tissue is often sent for pathological examination.
Usage
Usage note: The ampersand should be retained in the abbreviation; 'dilation' is preferred over 'dilatation' in American usage.
