endometrial ablation

A minimally invasive procedure that destroys the uterine lining to reduce or eliminate menstrual bleeding.

Full Definition

Endometrial ablation is a gynecologic procedure designed to destroy the endometrium (uterine lining) to treat heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) in women who have not responded to medical management. Various techniques can be used, including thermal balloon ablation, radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, or cryoablation. The procedure is typically performed as an outpatient surgery under local or general anesthesia. While endometrial ablation significantly reduces menstrual flow in most patients, it is not recommended for women who wish to become pregnant in the future, as it can lead to pregnancy complications.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify the ablation technique used (thermal, radiofrequency, etc.) in clinical documentation.
