Full Definition

A rectovaginal examination is a specialized gynecological examination technique where the examiner places one finger in the vagina and another in the rectum simultaneously. This bimanual technique allows assessment of the posterior uterus, uterosacral ligaments, rectovaginal septum, and pouch of Douglas (rectovesical pouch). It is particularly useful for evaluating suspected endometriosis, pelvic masses, or other pathology in the posterior pelvis. The examination requires specific consent and careful explanation to patients.
